The Dassenberg Horse Rescue Centre (DHRC) is situated near Atlantis just outside Cape Town and was initiated to provide assistance for severely traumatized and injured horses. The horses that are rescued by the DHRC are either stolen or neglected. The DHRC is not a government funded organization and relies heavily on public sponsorship.

A research project involving the documentation of horse and canine abuse and subsequent rehabilitation was initiated by GISCAPETOWN as of 19/07/2009. A horse sponsorship catalogue and documentation on the upgrading needs of the DHRC are presently being compiled. These items will help would-be donors make more informed decisions with respect to their choice of sponsorship and involvement in this rescue project. The documentation will also illustrate how donors may be able to use this as an opportunity to learn about, interact and bond with horses at the DHRC. An overview of the DHRC’s activities are presented below.

The original photos used to create the images portrayed below are archived by Ms Mayanna Muter and are the property of the DHRC. They show abuse associated with horse thieves (carried out by the bored youth - under 18 year olds) outside Mamre (Atlantis). The more recent photos and Google Earth images are generated by Giscapetown. The captions for the images shown below are included in the accompanying digital photo album that is presently being compiled.

Some of the horses can be saved provided the DHRC has sufficient funding. Sponsorships / donations are spent on:

  • More stabling
  • Improving camps for the horses
  • Better / safer fencing
  • Horse food
  • Wages (grooms)
  • Transport for the horses
  • Veterinary bills etc..
